Summer on the horizon: Maxi Dresses

When scrolling through hundreds of dresses to find  a handful for our feature today, you realize just how hard it is to make a maxi dress look good. Even some of the models in the images didn’t look good in the dress. Yikes! We’ve been working on this feature for quite some time because we’ve been on the search for the perfect maxi for quite some time as well. Something that is flattering not frumpy and sexy while being floor-length.

Here are the three rules of picking the right maxi:

1. It must have an adult print. Small animal prints, washed out colors or ultra-feminine colors like light pinks are tricky on maxis. Bold prints, solids and extra-large designs are better choices.

2. It must have some definition in the waist. If not, it adds 20 pounds and looks like pajamas.

3. It must be the right length and worn with the right shoes. Plan to have it altered if you’re going to wear it with flip flops or find a killer pair of wedges to wear with the longer styles.

Let’s start off with one of the classiest maxis we found. While probably not for the beach, it’s still a Spring Break dress for that romantic dinner with your significant other. Robert Rodriguez, $202 available on the Outnet.

Our next maxi pick is such a wonderful color and unique cut. The Flock of Birds maxi is by Free People and available on ShopBop for $138. It’s the perfect maxi to play up the boho look with leather sandles and feather earrings!

In this next maxi, we almost break our own rule about having some gather or cinch at the waist. Instead, this maxi has a great, flattering pattern and it would be easy to add a belt as well. It’s 100% silk, which definitely takes up the luxe factor. Beautiful! $275 on Pink Mascara.

This Ted Baker dress for $365 is the only strapless dress to make the list. Between the color, cut of the bustier and quality, we couldn’t resist! One of our favorites. Also comes in teal and peach but we love the orange.

Fabric of the moment…silk

There are few fabrics as beautiful, luxurious and timeless as silk. And we’re seeing a lot of it this time of year. It’s classy, flowy and sexy and damn hard to keep clean. Silk shows any water (or sweat) and can be a static nightmare (a la Mandy Moore in “Because I Said So”) but it’s still so fun to wear.

We’ve shopped online for some of our favorite silk looks, plus the best undergarments to wear with them. So happy dry cleaning and let us know what you love in the comments!

Silk Skirts

Talk about something that looks more expensive than it is! Check out this Day Birger silk embellished skirt from the Outnet for $95 (below). What a deal on something you’ll get compliments on in multiple seasons (just add tights!). A similar cut is a skirt we’ve featured before.

Of Two Minds silk skirt (right) with suede trim is more expensive at $25o from Revolve clothing but definitely a silk piece that will look great in multiple seasons.

And the final skirt is this snake print Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt for $255 from Bloomingdales. Love the print, love the flattering, short A-line cut. Don’t like the red shoes or tights on the model though. You can do better than that!

Silk Tops

Joie silk top from Zappos with three-quarter sleeves and a cinch neckline. Wonderful with jeans for the holidays. On sale from $218 to $$164.

Wear this silk, layered tank under a sweater, blazer or cardigan this winter. That color is so unique and the ruffles dress up any outfit. $140 from the Outnet.

Silk Dresses

Saved the best for last! It was so fun to shop for silk dresses but so hard to keep the price under $300. Here are our favorite silk dresses with one splurge that’s $370 and well worth it.

One shoulder black Cynthia Vincent dress for $245. This cinched waist style was really popular in silk and it doesn’t add extra weight because the fabric is so flowy and light. Or for a great winter holiday dress, this Thread Social bow silk dress for $208 is amazing. Black and navy is a great color combination.

And now for the SPLURGE! $370 Alberta Ferretti black and pink silk dress. Love it just as much as the Dolce and Gabbana silk dress we featured in our wish list dresses post.

What to wear under silk outfits

Silk clings. No doubt about it. You MUST wear a slip and here are some of our favorites from Spanx. Not only do they hold you in, but they’ll keep your beautiful silk skirt or dress from wrapping around your knees.

Strapless slip from Shopbop

Spanx half slip. A MUST have in your closet. $52 from Net-a-porter.

Black Cosabella short slip from Zappos for $90.

On Our Holiday Wish List- Part 1

It’s that time of year! It’s list-making time! This post will be part of a series about creating a wish list that’s dedicated to great fashion in 2012. Our group of flattering, unique finds can easily be added to YOUR wish list. Just send the link to your family, friends or significant other and tell them to get their online shopping done early!

Here are the bottoms on our wish list…

1. A better black pencil skirt. This Vivienne Westwood Red Label pencil skirt is $210 from Net-a-porter. It’s a must-have closet staple and a little bit of a splurge. Perfect for the list.

2. More flattering skinny jeans. Do you have a single, go-to pair of skinny jeans? If so, excellent, here’s another pair so you can rotate. If not, what are you waiting for?! Check out Rich and Skinny’s Royal Skinny jean for $150 from Rich and Skinny’s website.

3. An amazing, versatile mini skirt. Some are too short to wear to work, some are too long to wear to a party. This one is perfect. The Alice + Olivia embellished mini for $237 is worth every penny.

4. An A-mazing, A-line! The Raoul Ink A-line with leather trim is absolutely awesome. It’s a unique twist on one of the most flattering skirt cuts and is $350 from Stylebop.com.

5.  A velvet skirt. If the leather trim skirt isn’t for you, check out our second A-line wish list skirt. The Ralph Lauren velvet A-line is so soft and could be worn with a huge variety of shoes and in a variety of seasons. It’s $189 at Macys.

Our favorite sweater dresses

It’s cooling down in Denver. This was our first week where the weather didn’t break 70 a single time. We’re excited to break out the boots, tights and sweater dresses!

Sweater dresses can be beautiful and flattering or chunky and lumpy. The first rule of wearing a sweater dress is also wearing spanks. Spanks are not for bigger people or celebrities, they are for everyone!! We also like this Calvin Klein stretch satin slip from Net a Porter. It will keep you smooth and trim under your beautiful dress.

Now for our favorite choices in sweater dresses this season. All are available online and we tried to note shipping deals and steals where offered.

For slimmer shoulders and a petite frame, check out this cable sweater from Tibi. It’s $210 on the Outnet.

Layering with a slim jersey sweater dress is also a fun option! Put a brightly-colored tee under this jersey sweater and wear it with fun boots. Find it here on Net a Porter for $61.

Everyone needs a black sweater dress. With black heeled boots and amazing jewelry, you can wear it to a dinner party or with flats and a scarf, you can wear it shopping. This Max and Cleo dress is less than $150 and has a slightly ruffled neck and flowing hem. Find it on Zappos.

Another classic choices is this Sonia Rykiel dress that’s a wool-cashmere blend. Beautiful!

And for something totally fun, the BCBG Ruffle Tiered dress is amazing and available here at Macys.com.

Perfect Skirts

The bermudas are headed to the back of the closet and the capris look too summery…what’s a girl to do? Skirts! Flats, heels, booties and boots all look great with skirts and in the warmer fall weather, you don’t need thick tights to stay warm.

BUT, the eStyle Chat shoppers want to warn that finding the right fit in a skirt is no easy task. Ann Taylor has a great line of skirts and the thicker, lined material used on most of Ann’s clothes make their skirts a better bet for a business look.

For All Shapes

Of their fall skirts right now, the Sweeping Wool Tweed skirt will be the most flattering to different body shapes. Hitting above the knee will also make your legs look longer! It’s 100% wool so don’t forget to dry clean this guy.

Boy Shape

The pencil with the leather zippers adds curves and defines  your hips.

Larger hips or waist

The wonderfully forgiving but fun Flouce Back skirt is slightly shorter and has a fun back that creates an A-line and gives more room around the hips. When you click here to find it, be sure to look at the rear view!

See something you want to pair with the skirt? Link in the comments and we’ll tell you what we think!
